If one’s Instagram feed is anything to go by, Smoothie Bowls have been the rage right through summer (Aussie summer) and I’m probably going to see more for the US and UK summer!
But before all the warmth and sunny goodness heads north of the equator for the next few months, I figured I might jump on the bandwagon and see just what all the hype is about.
A bit about Acai
So you may have heard Acai being bandied about a lot of health circles…it’s one of the super-foods of the moment but waht is it…and apart from the luscious colour it gives smoothies… does it have any real health benefits?
Acai (PRONOUNCED aSYee) berry has been cherished by the Amazonian people for centuries. This unique berry has an extraordinary amount of antioxidants that are said to protect the tissues and cells of the body.
The berries grow on palm trees around the Amazon River regions. The trees grow up to 40 to 80 feet high without any branches. They are dark purple and look similar to blueberries.
This little super berry is said to assist with Heart health, digestion, reduce irritation from repository distress, improve cellular health, boost the immune system, have anti-aging properties and give you an energy boost.
It’s one busy berry!
Research is still inconclusive (like most many super-foods) but it certainly doesn’t hurt to get these into your smoothies.
- 2 tbsp acai berry powder
- 1 small frozen banana
- 1 avocado
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 150 g frozen berries
- 1 date, pitted
- 200 ml coconut water
- Slivered Almonds
- Chia Seeds
- Cacao Nibs
- Put all the ingredients for the smoothie base into a blender and blitz! For a thicker base use less coconut water, for a more liquid base use more coconut water.
- Divide the base between two small (or one large) bowl
- Be creative and scatter the toppings over the top of the smoothie bowl, randomly, in lines or in patterns.
