I admit it – I’m a gadget freak! Whether, its a sports gadget, technology toy or a kitchen appliance I just cant help myelf. But of course this can be a costly obsession and as I’ve grown older I’ve learnt to restrain myself (most of the time!)
Starting a new eating regime and of course cooking much more from scratch fed my obsession once again. But it also meant I had to be serious about this if I was spending money. Once I have the gadgets – I have to use them.
But what if you are on a budget. It might take you time to save up and get the utensils and tools you need to set up your kitchen. It can be handy to understand which ones will give you the most bang for your buck!
When you first start on any diet, you need to take a hard look at your kitchen and see if your kitchen gadgets will actually let you make anything on your new meal plan. After all, if you are going on a juice diet and you don’t have a juicer you might find yourself in some trouble.
This is yet another area where eating Paleo rocks. You don’t need any fancy equipment to get started on the Paleo path, in fact all you need is some basic kitchen utensils and a little patience.
So let’s say that you just started eating Paleo and you don’t have the money right now to go out and buy anything new for your kitchen. Even if you just have a shredder, a peeler, and a pan you can still make a delicious sunny side up egg sitting on a bed of sweet potato hash.
However when you are ready to invest a little more in some appliances here are my top three to consider
When you are ready to invest in a new kitchen gadget to expand your Paleo horizon, try a Slow-cooker If you are working away from home and hate the thought of cooking when you walk in the door, (we’ve all been there), then a slow-cooker just might save your sanity – and your waistline. You can throw in a pork loin, a few pinches of cinnamon, and a few apple chunks and have a delicious dinner waiting for you when you get home.
It is worth looking at a cooker that has a searing function as well. Anything that saves additional washing up is greatfully appreciated by the resident kitchen cleaner (I cook he cleans – great deal for me!)
At some point, you will be ready to ‘up your Paleo game’, and make even more delicious recipes. This is when you might want to think of getting a mixer or a blender. With these items you can do things like make your own sauces mayonnaise, and salad dressings or even create delicious desserts like grain-free brownies and cakes. We whip up a quick smoothie in ours for mornings we are on the run.
Once you are at the point where you have invested in the slow-cooker and the blender you will surely have become addicted to Paleo and the easy meal options that fall into this healthy lifestyle. In fact, you may even find yourself becoming more adventurous with your recipes. If you are looking to make things like Paleo bread, pizza dough, pie crusts and more than you might want to get a food processor.
I will mention here I’ve killed 3 in the past year. If you are processing nuts and dates 9and are occassionaly like me and forget to soak because you discovered that paleo chocolate slice at the last minute and cant wait til tomorrow – you need a high power-ed processor. This is the one item I recommend NOT skimping on – and extended warranty doesnt hurt!
A processor doesn’t just handle the simple things like shredding cheese for your salads or slicing vegetables for you to grill, it can also do more difficult jobs like kneading dough and grinding up nuts. But getting a food processor can be a bit of a burden on your wallet, (they typically cost anywhere from $100-$500), so it might not be something you want to get until you are sure that you have enough recipes to back up the investment that you will be making.
One of the biggest fears most people have about eating healthy is the pricetag that comes along with it. But eating Paleo is different, this is a healthy eating lifestyle that literally anyone can benefit from. Whether you are just starting out with a few dollars in your pocket and some small kitchen gadgets or you have a huge grocery budget and all of the latest kitchen appliances you will be able to find a Paleo recipe that will work for you.
After all when you think about it, the cavemen didn’t have any fancy kitchen gadgets and they were still some of the strongest, healthiest, and most fit people that ever lived.
